Photophobia
Photophobia is a first person puzzle game created for the 2017 UKIE Game Jam in which the player takes on the role of a
bystander that has been trapped in an Arch-Mage's labyrinth, and with the help of a spirit trapped within they labyrinth
they must try and escape by solving the mage's puzzles.
I was the lead Puzzle, Level, and Narrative designer for this 3 day jam project; the main mechanic of the game is that
when the player enters the darkness they will take damage, so they must use a magical orb in order to take in and expel
light in order to traverse the labyrinth and solve puzzles.
The biggest obstacle with this project was having to plan out the puzzles with a time constratint attached to the
project when working along side with creating the narrative; however, by asking my team to give me simple puzzle
mechanics, such as Boxes and switches, I was able to develop simple puzzle rooms. From there I was able to integrate
the light mechanics to develop the puzzles further and was able to make some complex puzzles during the design process.
My proudest accomplishment with this jam project was that I was able to make a fairly lengthy game for a games jam
project while including a good narrative; the art and technical team really brought this project together and together
we made a fun game.
