Derek's Quest

Derek's Quest is a 2D puzzle platformer made for the 2015 Global Games Jam, with the theme 'What do we
do now?'. This was the first game that I had ever created; it was made in Gamemaker Studio 5 and I was
the lead level designer for the game, and I provided some help to the programming.

The game was a basic 2D platformer, however our main mechanic for the game was a wall walking mechanic which
turned the game from a 2D platformer into a top-down adventure game. In order to get past some obstiacles
and beat some enemies the player had to use the top-down mechanic to progress through some areas.

My biggest obstacle with this project was that it was my first time designing a game; however, I used
the things that I have learned so far in my university career to design the screens in the game. I took
in design ideas used with games such as Super Mario Bros, and Megaman X to build the levels in a way that
could teach the player the mechanics without having to use a tutorial.

Overall, myself and my team were excited about our first project together in univerity; we had fun making
the game, and we turned a few heads during the presentation with our top-down mechanic.
